CATALOGUE RAISONNE
Pope Leo X with Cardinal Giulio de' Medici and Ludovico de’ Rossi. Florence, Pitti
Palace. (Gronau, 156.) Authentic in essentials; the share taken according
to Vasari (ed. Milanesi, V, 41) by Giulio Romano not identifiable.
(1) Copy by Andrea del Sarto, Naples. (2) Copy in the Corsini Gallery (by
Bugiardini?).
Vision of Ezekiel. Florence, Pitti Palace. Composition by Raphael himself,
carried out in the studio by Giulio Romano and perhaps by Thomas
Vincidor.
Portrait of Joanna of Aragon. Paris, Louvre. According to Vasari by a pupil,
presumably Giulio Romano; in any case no part of the execution by
Raphael.
Ceiling of the Garden Saloon in the Villa Farnesina. Story of Psyche.
Frescoes. Carried out after Raphael’s designs mostly by his pupils
Giulio Romano and Penni.
(1) Original design only for Venus and Psyche, pen and red chalk. Oxford, Ashmolean
Museum. (2) Corrections by Raphael’s own hand in Giulio’s red chalk drawing
for this, in the figure of Psyche, and in the Three Graces for the picture of the
Wedding Feast.
The Francis I. Holy Family. Paris, Louvre. Painting in all essentials by
Giulio Romano and Penni, the head of Joseph carried out by Raphael
himself in the style of the authentic portions of the Transfiguration.
(1) The cartoon fragment with Joseph, at Bayonne, Musee Bonnat, and St. Anne
with St. John and the Child Christ, in Melbourne ? by the hand of Giulio. (2)
Replica of the Madonna with the Child, dated (? old) 1517, presumably with the
use of the same cartoon by Penni.
St. Michael overcoming Satan. Paris, Louvre. Design by Raphael, carried out
by Giulio Romano, not without Raphael’s participation in the arm
and head of the Angel and of Satan, and in the landscape.
St. Margaret. Paris, Louvre. Executed by Giulio Romano from a com-
position by Raphael.
The so-called “La Perla” Holy Family. Madrid, Prado. Hardly anything of
the composition or execution by Raphael himself, but almost entirely
by Giulio Romano.
(1) Fragment of cartoon for the head, much worked over. Lille, Musee Wicar
(R.Z-, VIII, 379). (2) A large drawing of the entire composition in London appears
to be by Penni.
The Holy Family under the Oak-tree (also The Madonna with the Lizard, which
however occurs only in the replica in the Pitti Palace). Madrid, Prado.
The bold grouping in the novel landscape may possibly be traceable to
Raphael himself. Execution by Giulio Romano and Penni. The two
circular buildings on the eminence are the Temple of Minerva Medica
and the former Capella Santa Maria della Febbre near St. Peter’s.
The antique base to the right is the Triangolo Grimani, then at Tivoli,
now in the Ducal Palace at Venice.
Madonna with the Rose. Madrid, Prado. (Gronau, 170.) May possibly go
back to an elder design by Raphael. Execution by Giulio Romano and
Penni.
The small Holy Family known as the “Madonna piccola Gonzaga”. Paris,
Louvre. (Gronau, 171.) Composition and execution by a pupil,
probably Penni.
(1) Replica at Nanterre. (2) Red chalk drawing of the entire composition at
Windsor, Royal Library, by an artist near to Giulio Romano.
