fluted, straight arms and circular end points. The guard is a complete basket-hilt. All the iron parts
are burnished black. The centres of the bars are strengthened with knots like the ends of the
quillons. All these bosses and knots are openwork, in imitation of a loosely made ribband knot. There
is a brass plate on the blade with the inscription: “JOHANNI”. The bladesmith’s mark is the J. M.
of Johannes Mumm, Solingen, about 1630. From the Zschille collection, Grossenhain.

99. BASKET-HILTED RAPIER. The stiff two-edged blade has concave faces and a stout median rib.
The grip is bound with copper wire, and the pommel is pear-shaped. The flat arms of the quillons are
counter-curved and broaden towards the ends. The guard is a complete basket-hilt with two large triangular
guards. All the hilt parts are gilt and patterned with short fluted diagonals. It has a bladesmith’s mark.
City of Landshut ? (The rapier is similar to that of the Elector Johann Georg of Brandenburg in the Berlin
arsenal.)

North German, about 1650. Length, 119 cm. Dreger Cat. No. 92.

100. BASKET-SWORD WITH WHEEL-LOCK PISTOL. The blade is two-edged with middle groove,
having a pistol screwed to its long ricasso. The guard of the hilt is a complete basket. The grip is bound
with silver wire. The pommel is cork-shaped. The arms of the quillons terminate in round plates, the
left arm being formed as a knuckle guard. All hilt parts are diagonally fluted and gilt. The barrel of the
pistol and the carefully made wheel-lock are covered with engravings. The blade bears the king’s head
mark of Wilhelm Wundes, Solingen.

German, about 1650. Length, 122 cm. Dreger Cat. No. 132.

101. CUP-HILTED RAPIER AND SHEATH. The blade is two-edged with middle plane and two short
channels. The guard of the hilt is a cup hilt in the Saxon shape. The grip is bound with fine wire. The
pommel is pear-shaped, and the quillons are straight, broadening towards the ends. The two quillon
rings are broadened in the middle. The original sheath is of red velvet with locket and chape. The pommel
and all the exterior parts of the hilt and sheath have the fine hairlike design characteristic of the Saxon
makes. Bladesmith’s mark: recumbent trefoil cross. From the Dresden Historical Museum. Dagger
No. 35 belongs to this rapier.
