du Seigneur, s’amoncellent sur Sion, prets ä y eclater et ä repandre

women wbo bewailed and lamented liirn. But Jesus turning to
tbem, said: Daugbters of Jerusalem, weep not over me, but weep
for yourselves and for your cbildren. For beliold tbe days shall
come, wberein tbey will say: Blessed are tbe barren, and the
wombs tbat have not borne, and tbe paps tbat have not given
suck. Tben shall tbey begin to say to tbe mountains: Fall upon
us; and to tbe bills: Cover us. For if in the green wood tbey
do these tbings, wbat shall be done in tbe dry?“ (St.Luke23,27....)
All the people however have not joined in the wild cry: Crucify
Llim, crucify Iiim! And, first of all, tbe poor people had
esteemed Jesus as their propbet, had faitbfully and gratefully
loved Hirn as their friend and comforter. In their utmost con-
sternation at tbe decree of tbe council tbe „poor people“ among
whom were several females, accompany our Lord witli loud lamen-
tations. He, the mildest of men, tbe good, holy master had
blessed their babes, healed their sick persons and supported,
strengtbened and enlightened their hearts by His wonderful words.
And now, tbey lead Llim to death — wbo tben could refrain from
weeping; wbo could help sighing and weeping for His sufferings
as well as for one’s own loss, when LIe will be gone? — But
