the paved road descends rapidly, to permit
us to hope for so ample a treasure of sepul-
chres as at the Hercujanean entrance of the
town; but much would probably be dis-
covered, as this was certainly an outlet of
great consequence. Within the walls, as
will be seen in the view, the soil, both ve-
getable and volcanic, lies to a great depth.

or mathematical figures, which are pretty
