Early 16 th Century, (after 1513). Executed by Georgius Schbab Nea-
politanus Stirus. Small-fol. (27.5:21 cm). 27 double leaves. Vellum.
This interesting atlas of water-coloured pen-and-ink maps was made at the be-
ginning of the 16 th Century.
The first map is a World-Map. Then follows Europe w. 10 maps depicting Eng-
land & Ireland, Spain, France, Middle-Europe, South-Europe,
Italy, Sicily-Sardinia-Corsica, Eastern Europe, Hungary,
the Balkan and Greece. 4 maps represent Northern and Central-Africa, inclu-
ding E g y p t. Asia is to be found on 12 maps, viz. Asia Minor, Southern
Russia, the Caucasus, Palestin e, Mesopotamia, Persia, Arabia,
Scythia, India (4 maps) and B o r n e o.
The artist, whose aim was "metiri suo modulo" wrote on the verso of the se-
cond map: Georgius Schbab Neapolitanus Stirus / Me faciebat / Metiri se suo Modulo
decet / V(olente) M(aria) V(irgine) / Georgius Schbab. This interesting MS. is descri-
bed by Josef Fischer, Die Ptolemäushs. d. Georg. Schbab. Schweiz. Guteubergmu-
seum. 18. Jahrg. 1932. The world-map is repaired in the fold, slightly stained in
some places, but well preserved.
