no. 34. Baer, Die illustr. Historienbiicher, pag. 198—200 and LXXV, 476.
First Latin edition with illustrations.
The Livius of the Giunta is one of the most richly and beautifully
illustrated books ever produced in Italy in the 15th century. On the first
page of each decade there is an architectural border adorned with sea-
monsters, satyrs, etc., in the tympan we see the author in his study. Each
of these borders encloses a magnificent woodcut repres. scenes from the
Roman history. Of the numerous charming small cuts illustrating the 3
decades, most are unsigned, one bears the initials “b” of the famous
master of the Mallermi-Bible, and some others the initial of the master F
who surely was his scholar.
First and last leaves slightly wormed and defective on blank lower
margins, having suffered by damp. The three borders are slightly cut into,
not affecting the cut. Waterstained troughout on blank lower margins, but
generally a good copy with fine impressions of the cuts.
