INCUNABULA.
25
Hain* 10010. Proctor 3401. Not in Copinger. Brit. Mus. Cat. of Incun. IV, 29.
An exquisite piece of early printing, from Lignamine’s first press and the
third printing establishment at Rome. The second edition of this book, reprinted (in-
cluding the preface) from Sweynheym and Pannartz’s edition of 1470; ‘the two editions
cannot be far apart in time’ (Brit. Mus. Cat ). It is the third book printed by Lignamine,
a native of Messina and papal physician.
The volume is of special interest for the chapter headings some of which
are stamped by hand in large type, others filled up by hand and some left blank. The
Brit. Mus. Catalogue, speaking of Lignamine’s types, says: “The type is at first pure,
but in the Leo, Sermones, the third of Lignamine’s books, is introduced a set of small
capitals in the same style as the original capitals, the face being of the same height as
the ordinary lower case, but the body ranging with the rest of the type. These capitals
are kept separate from the rest and used massed for headings only in the Leo . . .”.
Fine copy of this magnificently printed and beautifully decorated volume. The
illuminated border to first page of text is slightly cropped on top and bottom; there
are a few MS. notes in margins and some wormholes through first and last leaves, but
otherwise the copy is in very fine and fresh condition and, for its fine
typography, its beautiful decoration, and its excessive rarity is a
most precious volume and a most desirable example from an in-
teresting and early Roman press.
Only four copies in IL S. A. according to Census.
