Hain-Cop. * 14182. Proctor 7075.
A most beautifully printed volume, and also a scarce edition of an important book
which enjoyed a great reputation and passed through a great number of editions. It is
preceded by a dedicatory letter addressed to the Cardinal Ascanio Maria Sforza, his
answer and some couplets by the author and the Cardinal, the latter praising the work
as follows. “Est OpUS exjmjum: toto celebrabitur orbe
Fama: tuae laudes ethera et astra petent.”
Very fine copy in an unusually fine state of preservation, with some manu-
script notes and underlinings by an early hand.
Only three copies in American Census.
70 SALIS (Trovamala), BAPTISTA de. Summa casuum conscientiae
(Summa Rosella). Venice, Georgius Arrivabenus, 1495.

of 44 lines, 568 leaves with foliation and signs., capital spaces, mostly
with guide-letters, large woodc. printer’s device on last page. (Kri-
steller 181). Contemp. binding of wooden boards covered w. richly stamped
black calf (rubbed), leather clasps (one gone), rebacked. Frs. 300.—
Hain-Cop.* 14183. Proctor 4927. Voullieme Berl. 4125. Brit. Mus. Cat. of Incun.
V, 385-6.
Note of ownership on title, a few stains and wormholes, numerous old marginal
pen-notes, otherwise a very fine and sound copy of this beautifully printed volume from
the press of G. Arrivabenus, also known as ‘Parens’, a Mantuan from Canneto who
started printing in 1483 in partnership with others, and from 1487 up to the end of the
century printed on his own account.
After the register of the book are four interesting couplets addressed to the pur-
chaser and two to the printer, claiming for him superiority over foreign printers:
“Hactenus ingenio valuit gens barbara: namque
Impressit plumbo quicquid ubique legis.
Mantua quem genuit: nunc est tua palma, Georgi
Cuilibet ingenio cedit: et arte tibi”.
