Bindings continued — 20 — Swiss Francg
originally written in Latin under the title: “De ligni sancti multiplici
medicina et vini exhibitionell. IV.”, the pharmaceutical use of guaiacum
is expounded. The first book deals with the preparation of the drug and rules
of diet during the cure. The second book deals with different diseases that can be
cured by guaiacum, e. g. diseases of the womb, podagra, epilepsy, madness and
other mental diseases. The third book deals exhaustively with sy-
philis. The last book treats of the use of wine as a remedy and the pre-
paration of it for this purpose.

A beautiful binding by Caspar Meuser, the successor of Jacob
Krause. He learned the art of bookbinding in Krause’s work shop and, in 1587,
two years after Krause’s death, took over all his tools and stamps. Our binding
must have been done about this time since the armorial panel on the frontcover
is that of Krause (see reproduction in Schmidt: Krause, plate 47, 1). The other
plate showing Judith, dated 1577, and the roll-stamp are described by Haebler:
Rollen- & Plattenstempel I, 282 sq., 4 and III. The binding is well preserved,
except for a few insignificant scratches.
The authenticity of the binding is proved by a MS. notice: „Weil dieses
