The portrait was executed after Szujski's
death from a photograph.
Jozef Szujski (1835-1883), a historian, pro-
fessor and rector of the Jagiellonian Universi-
ty, was a co-founder of the Cracovian histori-
cal school and one of leaders of the conserva-
tive party called "stanczycy".


Antoni GRAMATYKA EW
Born at Kalwaria Zebrzydowska in 1841 — Died in Cracow in 1922
In the years 1858-1870 he studied in the Cracow School of Fine Arts under the supervi-
sion of Wladyslaw huszczkiewicz and Jan Matejko. He carried on his education at
the Viennese Academy under Josef Fuhrich and Christian Ruben (1870-1872), and next
(1877-1879) in Cracow under Jan Matejko.
He painted historical, religious, genre and portrait compositions; he also designed murals.

Izabela Gramatykowa, nee Popielecka (died
in 1914), was the artist's wife. Anna Grama-
tykowna (1882-1958), their daughter, primo
uoto Ostrowska, secundo voto Ambrozewi-
czowa, was a painter and graphic artist.
