Unknown provenance
Duke Michat Oginski (1840-1902) was the
owner of the estate Plungiany in the Kowno
guberniya and marshal of the gentry in the
Teleszow province. He was a grandson of
Michaf Kfeofas Oginski (see item 268).

Artur GROTTGER HE
Born at Ottyniowice in Podofia in 1837 — Died at Amelie-les-Bains in the Pyrenees
in 1867
His first artistic endeavours were directed by his father, an amateur-painter. In the years
1849-1852 he studied in Lvov in Jan Maszkowski's atefier, additionaffy foffowing advice of
Juiiusz Kossak. In the years 1852-1854 he continued his education in the Cracow School
of Fine Arts under Wojciech Korneli Stattler and Wladyslaw Luszczkiewicz, next (1854-
-1859), at the Viennese Academy under Karl Blaas, Karl Mayer, Karl Wurzinger, Peter J.
N. Geiger and Christian Ruben. He stayed in Vienna until 1865, enjoying great popularity
as an illustrator of Viennese periodicals and as a painter. From Vienna he travelled to
Poland (Sledziejowice near Wieliczka, Cracow, Lvov, Barszczowice), Munich, Hungary and
Venice. Having returned to Poland in 1865, he stayed in Cracow, Sniatynka, Lvov,
Grybow and Dyniska. Late in 1866 he went to Paris. Due to his quickly deteriorating
health, in November 1867 he went to southern France, where he died.
He is the author of famous cycles of drawings: Wurszawa 1, IWrszawa 11, Poionia,
Lituania and Wqjna (War/ He painted and drew historical compositions, genre scenes,
portraits and works on the subject of uprisings and national martyrdom. He created the
iconography of the January Uprising.

It is a scene from Adam Mickiewicz's poem
