Maria JAREMA SK
In the years 1929-1935 she studied at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts in Ksawery Dunikowski's
atelier. Already as a student, she became linked to the Cracow Group and collaborated, together
with her brother Jozef Jarema, with the Theatre of Artists "Cricot" and Adam Polewka's puppet
theatre. After the war she started cooperating with Tadeusz Kantor's "Cricot 2" Theatre, design-
ing costumes to Cuftie/ish by Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz and Circus by Kazimierz Mikulski; she
belonged to the Group of Young Plastic Artists and the Cracow Group II. In 1958 she participated
in the Venice Biennial (distinguished with the prize of the F. Nullo Polish-Italian Society). Before
the war she was engaged in political propagandist actions of the leftist youth; in the 1950s she
consistently criticized socialist realism. In 1961 her oeuvre was posthumously exhibited at the Sao
Paulo Biennial.
She devoted herself to stage designing, painting, graphic art, and sculpture; she created precisely
constructed abstract compositions arranged on the principle of intermingling planes and rhythms
passing one another.
