in my possession: having the ambition of continuing as
long as J am able, to do every thing in my power for the
advancement of the fine arts, particular ly of those in my
own Country . I have lost no time in preparing for the
Public a short account of the molt interesting Vases of my
new Collection , having felected such Vases only as from
the peculiar Elegance of their design , or from the Sin-
gularity of the Subjects represented on them, have ap-
peard to me most worthy of attention.
The magnificent Edition of my first Collection of
Vases (wich Collection is now in the British Museum)
published by M. d1 Hancarville in four Volumes in folio,
became too expensive a work to ansoer the purpose,
whirh I first intended, when I encouraged that Publica-
tion, for young Artists are not osten in a situation of ma-
king such a purchase «, to obviate that material objection
I have now confined this new Publication to the simple
outline of the figures on the Vases , which is the essen-
tial , and no utinecessary Ornaments, or colouring have
been introduced *, by these means the purchase becoming
easy, it will be in the power of Lovers of Antiquity, and
Artists to reap the desired profit from such excellent mo-
dels , as are now osserd to them.
I likewise ssatter myself, that the Example of this
Publication may promote others of the same Nature in
this City, and that by Such means the Public may he-
reafter be in possession of a great number of Drawings
aster the most curious Vases in the Royal Collection at
Naples, and in a rich private Collection at Nola , which
with those abeady published by my direction, and the-
se, which are now offerd to the Public in the following
Sheets may be of great help to the Arts, and throw a
