Euristhe had a mind for this girdle, in consequence of which
Hercules was ordered to procure it for her. It was the
ninth of the labours, which he undertook by order of Eu-
risthe . He went to the borders of the river Thermadon ,
the boundary of the Amazons *, but Juno having always an
implacable hatred to Hercules, contrived, that the girdle,
which he might have obtained as a friendly gist, should
not be possessed without his having a fierce combat with
these warlike women.
This plate represents Hyppolita engaged with Hercu-
les , by whom she was killed, according to Apollodorus(a).
The Vase, on which are these sigures, is the exa6fc
companion of the former, and was found in the same Se-
pulchre near old Capua.
Plate 13.) This plate represents Theseus, who accor-
ding to Plutarch assisted the Lapithse against the Centaurs
after their insolence at the marriage of Pyrithoiis: If it had
been meant for Hercules, he would have had theNemean
lion's skin, which he always wore. If it had been meant
for Hercules combatting Anchios and Agrios, the only two
of all the Centaurs attra6ted by the smell of wine , who
dared to enter the house of Pholus, he would have been
represented, not with a Club, but with a firebrand, which
according to Apollodorus, he made use of in that cotabat.
The expression in the figures of this Vase is admira-
ble , particularly of the retiring wounded Centaur: it was
found near old Capua.
