polis and Thmuis, or Mendes, and forty-four miles from Pelu-
sium ; which very well corresponds with the admeasurements
lately made. Larcher, in his notes on the translation of Herodo-
tus, has endeavoured to prove that the antient name of Tanis is
only applicable to the small island Thennesus above alluded to;
notwithstanding that the Hebrew Zoan is uniformly rendered
Tanis in the Septuagint. Now, unless we suppose that these in-
terpreters were so ignorant of the topography of Egypt as to
mistake the capital of that country for another place, we must
conclude that Tanis was the Greek name for Zoan; and conse-
quently that Josephus, in the above-cited passage, alludes to
Zoan. And again, we must discredit the authority of the same
translator, who is inclined to place Zoan, the object of the di-
vine curse, at Sais, near the western skirts of the Delta; when
several passages in the Scripture tend to prove that Zoan was to
the East, near the borders of Egypt, once the seat of the Pha-
raohs, and adorned with monuments of Egyptian magnificence.
Here Moses performed his miracles before the taskmasters of his
country ; and some antiquaries have attempted to show that the
country around, being pasture land, was the Goshen which was
given to the Israelites.

Before we left Damietta we copied the two following inscrip-
tions from two antient pedestals, which we were told had been
transported thither some time since from Beirouth on the coast
of Syria. The stone is a white calcareous rock, very hard.
