* According to Saint Jerome, this word in the old Egyptian language signified a Goat. Mendcs
had likewise the same meaning ; and as this latter name does not occur in the Itinerary, it is pro-
bable that they apply to the same place.

f The commentators differ about the name of this place, and Wesseling hesitates whether to
refer it to Pllnthine mentioned by Strabo, or to the Nitrine, which occurs in the Epitome of Pseudo
Anastasius. Emm the similarity of the name, and its distance from Hermopolis Parva, I take it
to be no other than Saw, the Egyptian name of which city was Neith, to which a Greek termi-
nation appears to have been added. In the Timaeus of Plato is the following passage relating to^

Megabyzus. Vide Schol. Thucyd. lib. i. 10Q; and as Strabo describes it as adjoining to the
Athribitic nome, the site of Niciu will correspond very nearly with that of the modern town of
Menouf.
