k Hodie Behennese. The surrounding country, now a most desolate district, was once called
The Arcadia of Egypt. Under the Eastern Empire it could boast of twelve churches, besides se-
veral monasteries.
1 This Ibiu, or Graecc 'Itihy, was probably some noted cemetery for the interment of the em-
balmed Ibises, to which would be attached a temple and town. Neither travellers nor commentators
have attempted to fix its situation, though in D'Anville's map it nearly corresponds with that of
Minieh.

0 Hodie Siouth : the capital of Upper Egypt. v Placed by D'Anville on the site of Sedate.
'i Now Arabat, seven or eight miles inland. r 1 Iodic IIou. ' Hodie Dendera.
' This Papa, said to be but eight miles from Contra CoptOt), occurs no where else ; and it seems
remarkable that in this route no mention should be made of Thebes, which extended equally over
both banks of the river. I am of opinion that these two distances arc transposed, that Papa should
be placed thirty miles above Contra Copton, and Hermonthis eight miles from Papa. This would
bring the last-mentioned place to the site of the most Southern division of Western Thebes, and
the same name is, as I have observed above, preserved in that of Medinet Abou, or the City of
the Father; and the distance between Medinet Abou and Erment is exactly eight miles.
" Hodie Esm'li. % Hodie Edfou. w Situated about the quarries of Hadjar Silcily.
x Literally, the Camp. Here probably were stationed the advanced guards of the Roman garri-
son which occupied Syene.
