Purchased from Sir William Hamilton by Mr. William Chamberlayne. Grafton Gallery,

This picture was at one time in Romney’s studio, and that painter expressed a
high opinion of it. After being engraved it was reduced in size. Above are its pre-
sent dimensions. An enamel by H. Bone, said to represent Vigee-Lebrun’s “ Portrait
of Lady Hamilton as Ariadne ” and left by Sir Wm. Hamilton to Nelson, was sold
at Lord Northwick’s sale, in 1859, for £735 (Marquis of Hertford). Nelson bought a
portrait of Lady Hamilton, apparently by Vigee-Lebrun, in 1801 (See Dr. Pettigrews
book). Sir William Hamilton grumbled at “Emma” for being covered with a
“ tiger’s ” skin in the picture.
