Notes to Chapter II
1 The following studies are accounts of the history of Christianity in Africa: Groves (1948 -
1958), Latourette (1937 - 1945), Dammann (1968) and Falk (1979). Weller & Linden
(1984) give a survey of the spread of Christianity in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
2 The missionary activities of the Portuguese Dominicans and Jesuits in the middle Zambezi
region of Mozambique, which is adjacent to Zambia, from the 16th to the 18th century are
described by Rea (1970 and 1976). From the evangelistic point of view this must be regarded
as a complete failure. Economically there was also no lasting influence.
3 See the report by Binder Johnson (1967, 169 - 171).
4 For identification of the names and the mission societies associated with the various stations,
see Fig. 13.
5 The places where Catholic missionary work was started after Wold War II are not included
on the maps according to the definition of a mission station. See however Fig. 15 which shows
all Catholic parishes with their foundation dates.
