associated nurses’ training school, a large secondary school and various other
institutions (see Fig. 2). Three other health centres have been opened in the
neighbourhood. These developments reflect the Salvation Army’s traditional
emphasis on social work, both in Zambia and world-wide. Since the work was
concentrated in the Tonga-speaking areas of Mazabuka and Monze and the
lower Gwembe Valley, the Salvation Army has become a Tonga Church. Most
members are Tonga and even the later developed churches in the towns have
a large number of members from the Tonga area. The 155 individual churches
or preaching places, which in army terminology carry the name “corps”, are
led by soldiers of various ranks and divided into five divisions. The regional
distribution of ID = 58 demonstrates a very strong concentration (see Fig.
20). By far the largest section of the membership outside Southern Province is
found in Lusaka, the nearest and most important migration destination for the
