Sabin 38985. A superb set of aquatints on India paper “perhaps the finest series
of plates to any of the picturesque voyages” (Sabin). There are four plates relating
to America: Valparaiso, Guaco et Sereno à cheval, Rio-Janeiro, la grande rue de
Rio-Janeiro. Unfortunately plate 4 and 67 are missing.

and other curious matter. Besides many stories concerning oriental life and customs
(Turkey, Persia, Armenia, China, Siam, Tonking, Japan, India, Tartary, Russia) there
are also some relating to North and South America (Nos. IO, 64, 179.
Chapter No. 67, 68, 86, 87, .94—96 contain stories that are said to have taken
place in the “Südländern” (Severambes Islands). The scenery of these stories is
understood to be the so-called Terra Australis which but for the name has nothing
to do with the actual continent. See Kleinwächter, Staatsromane 58.
