A book of extreme rarity and interest being a pamphlet
against the sumptuousness shown in dress particularly the
decolletö of women. As we are unable to trace this book in any biblio-
graphy or bookseller’s catalogue, we are much induced to think it to have been
suppressed, inasmuch as the author does not hesitate to censure severely both the
bad habits at Court and the indulgence of the clergy.
The preliminaries contain the dedication (1. 2, 3), the „Aprobaeiön del Rev. P. M.
Fray Joseph Xento y Ribera, Predicador de Su Magestad“ (1. 4), the ,,Licencia“
signed by Lucas de Cabanas, notario (1. 5 ro), the ,,Aprobaeiön que de Orden del
Consejo Real y Supremo de Castilla diö el Dr. Don Ant. Ramos etc.“, dated July 26,
1687 (1. 5 vo—7), the „Suma del privilegio y Fee de Erratas (1. 8 ro), the „Suma de la
Tassa“ (1. 8 vo) and the ,.Prologo al Lector (1. 9 and 10).
The wor'k itself is divided into two sections of which the first deals chiefly with
the sumptuousness of dress, particularly the low-bodied dress of women, including
chapters such as: „Contra la escusa que dän las mugeres de sus escotados diziendo
que se usan en la Carte y en Palacio“ or „Escusas que dän algunos predicadores
y confessores para dexat de reprehender dichos träges profanos y deshonestos“. — The
second section treats of general grievances of the time. Here again neither Court nor
Clergy are spared. Chapters 5—7 rtelate to conditdons in America, cen-
suring the acts of violence perpetrated on the Indian natives and the attitude of
judges in the West Indies. In addition, an original account from Honduras is in-
serted (cf. p. 201—212).
The whole work is written with grteat frankness and constitutes a very interesting
document of the time. The woodcut on p. 301 represents a group of ladies in low
dresses Standing in front of a Crucifixus.
Slightly waterstained, title-leaf mounted, binding somewhat loose, otherwise well
preserved.
1306 Gavarni, P., Kostüme. 4 Bll. Lithogr. (18 : 25 cm). Paris, lith. Caboche,
Garneray et Cie., (ca. 1850). In Passepartout. 25.—
gewogen. 4. Freystadt 1713. 8 unn. Bll. 6.—
Lipperheide 3452 (1714).
