GESCHICHTE

is a Paragraph of 12 llnes dealing with America as t h e fourth
continen t, Its dlscovery by Vespucci in 1497, etc. Besides Vespucci
and a „Typus cosmographicus“ (the cosmography by Waldseemüller ?) there are also
occasionally cited Peuerbach and Johannes de Regio Monte, but not Stobnicza, Schöner,
or Apian, whose cosmography did not appear until 1524.
The manuscript consists of 4 quires, each of 8 leaves, and is divided into
9 chapters under the following headings: I. De sphaera. II. De circulis. III. De
parallelis. IV. Climatum observationem docens. V. De ventis. VI. (no heading).
VII. De universae terrae magnitudine et mesüra. VIII. Partitio terre habitate,
IX. De Oceano.
At end the scribe has named himself: „scripta et finita per mag. Petrum Frey-
lander Carintheum ... in florentissimo Studio Vienensi die Jacobi maioris
(July 25) 1523.
The manuscript is quite complete and is well legible.
The author’s name is not unknown in the annals of the Vienna University. This
Sebastian Wunderlin (also speit Winderlin, Winderel, Binderei or Bunderlin) was
among the 22 academicians who, at the Congress of Vienna (July 1515) held salutatory
orations (See Aschbach, Gesch. d. Wiener Univ. II, p. 135 seq.). His name also
frequently occurs in the acts of the medical faculty of that university (See Acta
facult. medicae univers. Vindobonensis, ed. by Karl Schrauf, III, 1904, p. 123, 137/38,
142, 157/58). Wunderlin is also known to have been the editor of Ovid’s Epistolae
Heroidum, Vienna 1513 (see Aschbach, 1. c. p. 137 and Denis p. 98).
The Petrus Freylander, whose name appears at the end of our MS., is also
mentioned among the orators at the above named Vienna Congress (see Aschbach,
1. c. p. 136).
