1857 to August 30 th, 1859. Original manuscript in 3 quarto volumes of
290, 272 and 272 pp. respectively, in all about 825 neatly written pages.

The present autograph diary by Karl von Scherzer is the most comprehensive ori-
ginal record in manuscript ever made of the celebrated Austrian „No-
vara“ expedition, in which the author, by Order of the Archduke Ferdinand
Maximilian, took an active part in the capacity of historiographer and
leader of the scientific Commission. The great achievements of the
expedition are worldwide known.
As regards America the work is of particular Interest for Brazil. Chili,
Peru and Panama. The description of the stay made at Rio de Janeiro
fills 61 pages, that of Valparaiso 38 pages. Here as everywhere detailed de-
scriptions are given of both towns and their buildings, of the various visits to In-
stitutes, and many prominent persons pass in review. There are amongst others many
notes about book-trade and book-production in Brazil while the description of Val-
paraiso includes also an excursion to Santiago. Statistical notes concerning commerce,
Immigration, prices are particularly full. At last we find many extensive notes on
the several places touched on the home journey, such as Caldera Cobija,
Karl W. Hiersemann, Leipzig, Königstraße 29. Katalog 647
