2. Astronomie. Astrologie
21
A book o f outstanding Interest in the hl story o f m a p - m a k -
ing and the reallsation of the c a r t o g r a p h i c a 1 image of
the world. An exceedingly rare tract, of which no copy is traceable
to have come into the market since the Bedford copy announced by Quaritch in 1887
(see Gen. Cat. V, no. 28131). No record in the American Book Price Current or the
Book Auction Records. We are able to locate only 3 copies of this edition (John Car-
ter Brown Library, Augsburg Municipal Library, Vienna Court Library). Weither Har-
risse nor Nordenskjöld, who eite after Varnhagen and Quaritch respectively, did ever
see a copy.
The book is a somewhat enlarged edition of Apian’s „Isagoge“ and was like its
predecessor destined to serve as an introduction into the study of the author’s second
world-map now lost (See Ortroy, 1. c., no. 3 and M. H. Wagner, die dritte Weltkarte
Apians in Nachrichten von d. Kgl. Ges. d. Wissenschaften zu Göttingen, 1892, p. 641
to 572).
The particular importance of the present „Declaratio“ resides, however in the
fact that it contains on its title-page a small world map (53: 95 mm) which
is a rough r epresen ta t ion of the lost large map described in the
book. This small map is — apart from the text — the only clue to a r e -
construction of Apian’s second map of the world. (The small map
contained in the „Isagoge“ represents only the old world; .see Ortroy no. 10).
The great merlts of Apian’s second world map are:
1) It is the first published world map in oval projection (See Ortroy no. 3 and
Nordenskjöld, Faks. Atlas p. 90, no. 12).
2) It is the first published world map to have the north at the bottom thus
following the practice adopted by Arabian geographers.
3) Owing to this new view-point the American continent, which here is deli-
neated in a small triangular shape and designated With the letters AM, appears to
the left of Asia, a configuration never attempted at in any earlier map.
All these unusual features occur in the small map of the present „Declaratio“,
which thus acquires a Capital importance as the only graphic reminder of Apian’s
achievement.
The text is divided into 17 „Problems“ (as against 12 in the „Isagoge“). Seven-
teen lines are devoted to a description of America, including express reference to the
particularly novel configuration of the world. The date 1522 appears at the end of
the preface and both Ortroy and Schottenloher agree in taking it also for the date of
publication.
It is to be noted that Nordenskjöld, who States to have never seen a copy, was
quite unable to realise the intrinsic value of this little book and its map for the
history of cartography.
The last leaf, containing the end text (Problems 15—17), the imprint, and a
figure of the sphere of the world, is in excellent facsimile. Apart from this deficiency
the book is in very good condition. The Contemporary colouring of the map is laid
on in thin transparent washes, doing no harm to the engraving. The margins are un-
cut (163 : 218 mm).
Sessae, 1551.
24 Bll. Pgtbd. 40.—
Ortroy Nr. 92. Not in Sabin or John Carter Brown. — Titel u. letzes Blatt be-
schrieben. Durch einen Druckfehler heißt es auf Bl. 24a „MDII“ statt ,,MDLI“.
180 — cosmographia per Gemmam Frisium ab omnibus vindicata mendis.
Add. eiusdem argumenti libellis ipsius Gemmae Frisij. With large wood-
cut on title, folding map of the world, about 75 woodcut illu-
strations and diagrams and numerous Initials. Small 4 to. Antverpiae, apud
Christ. Plantinum, 1574. New cloth binding. 220.—
Not in Sabin. Ortroy 51. J. Carter Brown I, 252. Ledere 37.
Collation: 3 unnumb. 11., 63 numb. (2—64), and 2 unnumb. 11.
Rare Antwerp edition containing the large world-map (21 : 31 cm) which in
many copies is absent. The chapters referring to America are on 1, 30
and 48. Besides the world-map, the American continent is depicted on the two
woodcuts in the text (1. Ivo, 28 ro). There are in all 10 revoling diagrams
affixed to 4 woodcuts. — First four leavese very slightly foxed, otherwise a good and
perfect copy.
