Cockle 501, note.
The very rare second edition of the first illustrated
printed work on war engines. One of the earliest books printed at Verona
being the second by Boninus de Boninis, who produced at that town only three
other books. A very fine copy with broad margins.
The 97 woodcuts are based on the same designs at those in the celebrated 1472
edition, but each one differing from these in many particulars. They represent all
sorts of catapults, cannons, guns, bombs, towers, forts, levers, pontoon-bridges,
scaling-ladders, scythe-bearing chariots, and other engines and Implements of warfare,
the whole giving an unrivalled pictorial survey on the military Science of the period.
As regards arms, book X contains the following interesting chapters (as trans-
lated into English): On arms and whence their names are derived —• On defensive
arms — On offensive arms.
