the Medici medal than for this. Bernardo di Pietro del
M° Bandino Banducci, a Florentine physician, was born in
1452: Milanesi notes that in the portata al catasto of
1480, S. M. Novella, Lion Rosso (a c. 167, at bottom), he
is returned as being 28 years of age; by 1522 he was dead.
Judging from his age the medal must be after 1500. None
of the castings known to me seems to be actually of the
time.

This man appears to be a foreigner, from his beard and
the spelling of his name, which seems to be an attempt at
the German pronunciation Wilhelm. Beards did not begin
to be worn generally in Florence until about 1529; before then
Corbizo and one of the Martelli were the only people in
Florence with beards (Landucci Contin. Diar. Fior. ad
ann., ed. lod. del Badia, p. 371). The beard of Lancilotti
(no. 1049) was doubtless grown in foreign parts. The
medal being of the same year as those of Greudner
(nos. 1047-8) may perhaps represent one of his suite.

Perhaps made at Florence by some one in the neighbour-
hood of Niccold Florentino in 1503, when Ippolito (then
aged about 24), hurrying to Rome on the death of Alex-
ander VI, was laid up at Florence with a broken leg.
Though Ippolito does not bear the title of cardinal, this
medal must be later than his promotion by Alexander in
1493, when he was less than fifteen years old. It is also
unlikely, judging from his apparent age, that it was made
when he passed through Florence on 2 Dec. 1497; and on
14 Dec. 1501 he stayed only one night (Landucci, Diario').
