OTHER RESTITUTIONS AND FORGERIES

BOCARDI (Bianca di Andrea de’).
1111. Obv. vBL’ANCADEANDREAyDEBOCARDISy
Bust 1., made from that of Bianca Riaria
(no. 1008).
Rev. FIDES CHARI tas speSy Female figure
with chalice in 1., r. hand on head of child,
looking up at sun : all made from rev. of medal
of Filiasio Roverella (no. 1061) or of Joh.
Greudner (no. 1048).
Naples, f 33 mm. Rin., no. 647.
This is a forgery, both obverse and reverse having been
made by recasting from medals of the other persons men-
tioned above.
GUALBERTO (San Giovanni).
1112. Obv. * S * IOHS * GVALBERTI * IH STITV
TOR * ordinis * vallisvm^si Bust 1., bearded,
tonsured and nimbate, wearing habit; on
truncation OBIT * MLX and in field behind XII*
Field stippled; outer pearled circle, and inner
pearled and plain circles.
Rev. S 5, IOHS j, GVABERTI * FVDAVIT M VAL
lisvbrosa 5, View of the Monastery of Val-
lombrosa, with woods behind; on foreground,
MXX; above, two oval shields. Borders as on
obverse. Field stippled.
(a) Florence, in mm. Sup., no. 651. {b) London,
f 114-5 mm.
The shield on the dexter side is: per pale, (1) a lion

rampant (to sinister), (2) a fesse (?). It must be, as Mr. Van
de Put suggests, the arms of the contemporary abbot; but
we have no list of the abbots of Vallombrosa. San Gio-
vanni was given the Buondelmonti arms. The other shield
bears a left hand holding a tall crutch surmounted by a mitre
(for Vallombrosa). The stops are not as shown above, but
one of the three legs is turned the wrong way.
The medal is obviously not earlier than the seventeenth
century; this is shown by the lettering (which seems to
have been impressed in the mould with an alphabet of
punches) and the stippling of the field, as well as by the
general style.
The one-sided medal in the Simon Collection (no. 178,
diam. 99-5 mm.), reading S«IOHS«GVALBTMNSTITV
TOR • ORDIS • VALLE, is also late; the bust on it is
a modified version of the same model as that on the piece
just described.

MACHIAVELLI (Niccolo).
1113. Obv. Bust r., tonsured, wearing pleated
gown buttoned on r. shoulder. The original
inscription has been removed and N • MACH •
FLO • incised on 1.
Rev. None.
Arm. Ill, 192, e (91 mm.).
(a) Formerly Newall, 91 mm. Purchased from Salting,
May, 1891. Perhaps the Thibaudeau specimen. (^For-
merly Thibaudeau. Arm., loc. cit. Heiss, Flor., i,p. 157.
Apart from the false inscription, this has no claim to be
a portrait of Niccolo Machiavelli; nor has much of the
original Florentine character of the medal survived the
treatment which it has suffered.
