but the English new years day still
beats the B-ngali new year’s day (1st
Baisak) in splendour. The Bengali new
■ year’s day is mainly the shopkeeper’s
New Bork festival : his shop is decora
ratel, the old Hooka is placed on .the
farash in the ancient fashion and some
cheap sweetineets are offered but se'dom
eaten owing to the smell. Some ladies
wear new sarees : that’s all.
The Bengali new year’s eve (Chait
Sankrant) is wretched festival : its name
is Satooa Sankrant. Satooa^ was a very
cheap poor mans, food in days gone by
■ though how it is Re.l or 1,4 a seer. Men
conceived the festival in a very simple
.way, and it cannot bear comparison with-
the- English new years eve. Owing to
Pitch Podli or Indian cakes the last
djiy df. Ppus- is said to rival all English
festivals
