SIKKIM ELECTIONS

Gangtok, February 28, 1953.
For the first time hi her history Sikkim is go ng'
to the polls for the formation of a seventeen member
Legblatlire. It shall be composed of twelve elected
and and five nominated members. Tim twelve elected
seats shall be * filled by six Bhutja-Lepchas and six
Nepalese., , It is understood that parity fetween the
Bhutiu-Lepeha and Nepali communities' will be main-
triced in the nominated seats also. Their shall bo a
Primary election by Rhiitia-Lepeha vot< is only- for.
electin'* twelve Bhutia Lepcha candidates, out of which
six, along with other six Nepalese,'- shall be elected in
the Final election which shall, be joint.
After two invalidation and three withdrawals, the
valid nominations are as follows :— •

A conference of the
Tamangs domiciled in India
was held for the first time
at Matigarah. It lasted for.
three days from the. 20th ,
to 22nd February 1953.
Ahyotffiv.e thousand Ta-
mangs were present, besides
500 delegates .from diffe-
rent parts'of the country,
.particularly from Darjee-
ling. Dobars, Sikkim,
Assam, Nepal-.
The Tamangs are
Gorklms by nationality,
and they,, as a single unit,
form a significant bulk in
the population of the dis-
trict o. Darjeeling. There
are about 30 lakhs of them
inside Nepal alone. But
unfortunately they are the
most down trodden people
as a class and backward
in the true sense of the
term.
