ELECTION FEVER IN SIKKIM

Sikkim Rajya l’rojii Sammellan
which has not set 'tip any Bhutia-Lep-
cha candidate for the primary elections
seems to be quiet at present, hut the
Sikkim State Congress and the Sikkim
National Party have started electioneering
in right earnest. Speeches through loud
speakers are being delivered in all the
important bazars on hat days

both the parties have issued their
election manifestoes. The. Sikkim State
Congress claim that the abolition of
Zamindari, forced labour system House
Tax, formation of elected village Puncha-
yats and the first Legislative Council in
Sikkim with an elect'd majority' are
the few of their achievements.

The Sikkim National Party have
however promised better education, impro-
ved public-' health and better means of
communications. ,

GAME FEDERATION FORMED

Darjeeling, March 19-
At a meeting of the Game Federa-
tion of Bengal, held at Mai recently,
Mr. K. I) Avari, was unanimously elected
Hony. Secretary, of the Federation.

The constitution of the Federation
consi-ts of :— ^

(a) The Darjeeling Game Association.

(b) The 1’ista Toorsa Game Association,
(c * The Toorsa Sankos Game ‘Association,
(d) Late P. D. Raikuts Estate.

The other clubs and Associations
whose object is the better preservation
of game and wild life in Bengal,

l lie Governor of West Bengal, is the
Patron in Chief and toe Hon blo Minister
Forest and Excise, is the Patron of the
Association. The Maharajadhiraja of
Burdwan and Mr, Delnmare are President
and Vice-President respectively.

rist Officer, Calcutta, the Darjeeling^
Wefare Association Darjeeling,-organised
a reception at Raj Bhavan, Darjeeling,
in honour of 15 representatives of impor-
tant' Travel Agencies jn America,

A hill folk dance by; members o,f
Thila Barg was much upprec'ated by the
visitors. The Additional Deputy Com-
missioner presided and a representative
gathering of ■ citizens was present. .

The A.D.C. in. a. short address wel-
comed the guests and hoped that tourism
would ultimately enhance the degree of
friendship between America and, India.
He outlined the arrangements pow afoot
to inaugurate a Tourist Bureau id Dar
joeling to .eater for the requirements of
foreign' tourists..

NEW APPOINTMENT IN SIKKIM

Gangtok, March 18
Sri Moti Chand Pradhan, a West
Bengal Civilian, who retired last year,
has been appointed by the Dcwan, Sikkim
State, as a first class officer iii Sikkim
It is learnt that he will be given the
ehargo of the Transport Department as
a temporary, measure. Sri Pradhan belon u
to a family of on? of t he earliest leading
Nepaii settlers in Sikkim. He was the
-first hillman to graduate from Sikkim
and Darjeeling, a id is well-known both
in Darjeeling & in Sikkim.

CHILD KNOCKED DOWN

Darjeeling, March. 18
On 15-3-53, a child was knocked
down by a Jeep near the Lloyds Bank,
Ltd, Darjeeling. The child'who sustained
injuries on the body was removed to
hospital and the driver was arrester!.
