BliAVO TENZING

Tenzing, of Darjeeling, and the New
Zealander Hillary have conquered the
hitherto unconquerable Mount Everest.

Tenzing also known as the “Tiger of
the. Snows”, climbed to 2S.215 ft. on
Mount Everest along with Raymond
Lambert of the First Swiss Expedition
on May 28, 11)52. That was the highest
point ever climbed by any mountaineer
in tiro world.

Tenzing took part also in the Seoon.t
Swiss Everest Expedition in October, 1952.
Dr. Chevalry, leader of the party, re-
marked that, “at a height of eight thou-

■ sand meters' when many other felt the
strain and were exhausted, Tenzing, it

■ would .seem, could continue covering
appreciable .distances onwards and up-
wards. with,amazing ease and encouraging
( beer ” ..

derful skirl in, mountaineering, the Swiss
and Mhe-tBritish have honoured Tenzing
T>V "conferri-im upon him the honorary
membership of the Swiss Alpine Club
and the Himalayan, C'liib, respectively.
The King of Nepal has also honoured
Tenzing ■ by/Swarding him the “Nepal-
Pratap-Bardhak Medal, and .‘Nepal Tara’
which is a rare distinction t.ver given
.to. anybody in Nepal.

Tenzing has to his credit-the success-
ful’ climbing'of the summits of several
other vergin. peaks of the Ilimalyas
- Raymond I.aml^ert, in a -"letter,
•dated January 14, 1953, writes to Tenzing
from Geneva: “I hope v.ery much to
see you again soon—perhaps it will be
in Switzerland this time. In any ease,
if you do come to Europe youvwill be
given a great welcome as the name

he works as “Snow and Mountain Guide"
to the Indian Army.

I enzing s real name is Tenzing Norkay.
He is a Sherpa by caste. Originally he
was an inhabitant of Thame in the far
eastern boarder of Nepal very near to
libet. But Tenzing has now permanently
settled down in India and at present
living in Toong Soong Busty, Darjeeling,
in the State of West Bengal, where lie
lives with his wife and two daughters—
Pemba and Nima.

Tenzing and liis wife have very keen
desire to give good education to their
daughters and to build for themselves,
if possible, a small cottage near Toong
Soong Busty where ' most of the famous
Sherpa mountain guides and climbers
f reside. The Statesman Ltd. of Calcutta
have collected and handed over to Tenzing
Rs. 12 000/-for construction of a house in
Darjeeling while Himalayan Times,
Kalimpona is collection a further sum
of Rs, 1500'- for furniture. Tenzing is
very modest and unassuming in his manners
and wears an ever-smiling face. He is
now 39.

M’hen Calcutta newsmen mentioned
Tenzing’s monumental achievement to
West Bengal’s Chief Minister. Dr B. C.
Roy, lie feelingly replied:

“Bravo Darjeeling ! you have produced
a man who has conqured Everest.”

CONQUEST OF MCUNT EVEREST

SPEdlAL COMMEMORATIVE STAMPS TO BE ISSUED
The Indian Posts and Telegraps
Department have decided to bring out
a set of special stamps to commemorate
the conquest on Mount Everest by Sherpa
Tenzing and E. P. Hillary.

The stamps will lie printed by
photogravure.
