SPORTS IN DARJEELING

Darjeeling, Nov. 10

1 ho annual district sports
organised under the aus-
pices ol the D. & D. A. A.
were held again this year
in good weather and before
a large and appreciate
gathering who filled the
pavilion and ranged them-
selves on either side of
the track. The flat of St
Joseph’s College which was
left decorated after the
Collegb Bports looked most
attractive with colourful
flags fluttering beneath the
cloud flecked sky—a better
day could not have been
chosen for the running of
the sports. His Excellency
Dr. H. C. Moqkerjfe, Go-
vernor of West Bengal
presided over the function
and Shripiati Mookerjee
gave away the .prizes. .

retary of the D. & D A.A.
who spoke in few well
chosen words said that, for-
the first time in these
sports there was a very
colourful march past of
each of the groups of
competitors led by the
Pipe Band of the Bihar
Regiment There was also
a victory di9s errcled for
the occasion. Over ‘Jilt)
entries were received Two
hew challenge cups were
presented one by Sri
Tenzing Norkey and other
by Mr. T. H. Johns.

SPORTS DAY AT

The 1953 Pujah Sports
for employees of the Govt.
Cinchona Plantation, Mun-
song was held to-day at
Halboo Ground. Nor one >
day, the otherwise deser-
ted and quiet plantation
ground scintillated with
coloured paper and balloon
decorations and the 'gay
datsai dresses of a crowd,
that hovered around the
l,r '00 mark. Recorded
music from amplifiers
mingled with the beatings
of maials. dumjihoos and
music of various folk'
instruments.

Many items such as,
‘Wheel-barrow Race for
grandfathers’ and ‘Pillow
Fighting fer men' provided,
occasional splashes of lau-
ghter. while the Inter
Divisions Relay and Tug-.
O-War kept everybofTy on
tenter hooks of excitement
till the v iv end. Besi-
des field and track events,
various folk dances had
also been arranged. The
function." as a whole,
worked off smoothly till
the jverv close

'The Managing Commi-
ttee wish to express their
heartfelt thanks to all
outside -v sitors, who gra-
ced the meet with their
honoured presence and
made iis kamanays feel
less unknown and isolated.

at DARJEELING

Shremat Bhagwat Puran
was recited at the" children
Ground near Darjeeling.
Chowk Bazar from the
2Jth October to 31st
October 1953 daily.

Shri Pandit Ptinny a
Prasad Sliarma Shastrt- of
Nepal recited the Puran.

all community attended
the Puran and got religious
inspiration from the tea-
chings of Shri Veda Biyas
Muni and -beautiful eX-!
pianation in Nepali from
Panditji

On the 1st of Novem-
ber there was Homa and1
Yagu with twenty one-
brahmin Pandits and thou-
sands of people showed
their earnestness by par-
ticipating ,i.n"- it and in
the evening After Nagar
Kirtan, the flower and
other Prasads were iramen-
sed at Kagjhora.

For this celebration, a
strong. Committee , was
formed under the presi-
dentship of Sri Padam
Prasad Pradhan. B L.

Shri Hari Dass Pradhan,
Secretaty of the committee
was all attention to the
public.

Publicity Officer and the
other gentlemen, who hel-
ped wflth the judging of
events and the provision
of music and radio com-
mentaries over the micro-
phone.
