NEED FOR UNITY IN INDIA

The imminent need for
a united front was never
greater in India than at the
present moment. Any lack
of unity on the home
front in these difficult
times is almost certain to
be exploited by the ene-
mies of Indian freedom.
In truth while Pakistan’s
existence as a free nation
is threatened from within,
India's trouble is mainly
external. It is true, of
course, that there are two
ponderous power blocs to
deal with. ’ Teleologically,
however. Gandhi’s country
can have no sympathy for
the godless cult of com-,
munism. On the other
hand, while in repect of
details there' can be, and
certainly there are, some
serious d fterences between
this country and the other
power bloc. vet. it. must
.be conceded that there is
more in common between
India .and America than
be.tween India and Moscow
The proposed Pak-Ameri-
can military -pact has
caused widespread resent-
ment in I dia mainly on
account of tl}®"' apparent
lack of understanding of

India’s soul which, in the
very nature of things,
cannot be really opposed
to any effort to keep the
communist wolf off Civi-
lisation’s door.

In this hour of crisis
which might develop into
a peril, it is the Prime
Minister’s privilege to func-
tion not only as the leader
of the Congress party but
ns the chosen guide of his
people irrespective of party
alignments. “United, we
stand; divided we fall.”
