The Taxation Enquiry
Commission continued their
hearing of witnesses in
Calcutta today. In'.tho
forenoon, the commission
examined representatives
of: the West Bengal Mu-
nicipal Association who
pointed out that the re-
ceipts of Municipalities
were inadequate and
should be increased. They
urged that the State (>o-
v'srnment should allot to
the municipalities a res >-
liable .share, of the receipts
from entertainment tax.
motor- vehicles tax, excise
duties and stamp duties
collected on land trans-
fers. They stated that1 the
exemption of Union. Gov-
ernment property from
municipal taxes must be
withdrawn. A suggestion
was made that municipa-
lities should be allowed to
take up houso c- nstruo-
tion wprk with a view to
providing amenities and
also for increasing .their
own resources. In • their
view octroi duty under
the present circumstances
will increase the price.of
commodities. Later, the
Commission examined re-
presentatives of West Ben-

gal District Boards Asso-
ciation who pointed out

Tobacco .Company. These
witnesses suggested sim-
plification of'the structure
of taxation of tobacco
used for clyaretls. ant
stressed the need to expand
cicarette sn'cs from the
viewpoint of maximising
revenue.'
