NEW HIGHWAYS FOR
TIBET
Kalimpong, May 25
Since the Chinese occu-
pation of Tibet several
highways are being built
in Tibet for traftiic facili-
ties inside Tibet and also
for linking it with the
Chinese mainland. The
Sikivug-Tibet Highway is
being continued west of
Chaugtu to Lhasa. The
Changtu-Ahpa Highway,
two thirds of which has
already been completed,
will be linked with another
Highway to Lauchow. This
has beoome an important
line of communication says
the "Peoples China," for
the Tibetan People in
north west Szeohuan Pro-
vince. A Chinesi official
report Hays that since the
opening of the finished
section of the Chengtu
Ahpa Highway, trade ha?
steadily increased in the
Tibetan Autonomous Re-
gion in Szeohuan Province.
This accounts for the pre-
sent diminished trade bet-
ween India and Tibet

Another reason for
the present diminished
trade here is that prices
of various daily necessities
have been greatly reduced
there. For example, the
price of one tan (50 kilo-
grammess) of tea has been
reduced by nearly 50%.
The recently started 'State
Trading Companies' have
raised the purchasing pri-
ces of various local
products.
