Under the auspices of
the Training StudeDts
Union Dr S C. Chatterji
delivered an interesting
lecture on the History of
Physical Education in
India' on Tue»day Ihe 15th
June 1954 at the Basic
Training School, Kalim-
pong.

In hit introduction
the learned speaker said
that it was very difficult
to say which country
could claim to have first
invented a sound system
of Physical Education,
for the ancient histories
of Greece, Persia China
and India mentioned phy-
sical exercises at a means

for body training. The
Westerners believe that
physical training attained
a very high degree of per-
fection in ancient Greece
as we find in Olympic
game and athletics. They
argue that what the
Greeks could not conceive,
the Swedish »ystem of
•zymnastics has completed
by considering the deve-
lopment of not only of
body but also of mind
through a well regulated
course of physical exerci-
ses based on the know-
ledge of human anatomy.

Dr. Chatterji, however,
observed that India develo-
ped the system in olden

times on more scientific
lines than Greece or even
Sweden, for while they
considered only the all-
round development of body
and mind, the Indo-Aryans
of antiquity practised phy-
sical exercises as an aid
to bodily, mental and
spiritual growth, as we
find in Yogic practices.

In conclusion Dr.
S C. Chatterji pointed
out that a body it not a
mere machine to be over-
hauled and turned up by
physical training experts.
It is a life form in and
through which soul may
attain further evolutions.

In the end the Pre-
sident of the Union
thanked Dr. Chatterji for
the very lucid manner he
dealt with the subject and
emphasized the importance
