6 SHERPAS TO BE TRAINED IN
SWITZERLAND

< Darjeeling, July 15

Six Sherpa Tigers will
leave here on July 16
for Switzerland for trai-
ning as instructor guides
under the Swiss Alpine
Foundation. The Sherpaa
are: Ang Tharkey, Gyalt-
zen Mickchem. Da Nam-
gyal Ahg Temba, Nowang
Topgay . and Nowang
Gouibu.

Ang Tharkey, who
came into prominence in
the Annapurna expedition
of M Herzog, is the oldest
of the group and is con-
sidered as an excellent
sirdar, if not the be6t.
He has recently completed
his biography, which is
being published in Franch
by a lJaris publisher.

Gyaltzen. who accom-
panied the Japanese ex-
peditions in the last three
Beasons, is in his forties,
and is an experienced
sirdar 1

Da' Namgyal, who
was the personal sherpa
to Sir John Hunt in last
year's British Everest Ex-
peiition, has been praised
by him as "one of ,our
most outstanding men"

Ang Temba who also
accompanied the Everest
Expedition, is a veteran
climber.

Nowang Topgay, nep
hew of Tenzing, is in his
twenties. He accompanied
the British Everest Expe-
dition last year, and was
awarded, the Tiger badge
this year.

Nowang Gombu, who
is 19 is alo a nephew of
Tenzing. He made his
climbing debut with the
British Expedition last
year.

The surpiision omis-
sion among many other
notable candidates is Ang
Nima who has been prai-
sed by Sir John Hunt
as "one of ' our most
skil ed and experienced
sherpa " He is 24 and was
an outstand;ng Bherpa
porter in last year's Eve-
rest Expedition, having
climbed up to Camp IX
(27,900 ft.) with a heavy
load, thus becoming the
sherpa to plitnb the highest
point except Tenzing.

The six eherpas are
due to leave Dum Dum
by a B.O.A.C, plane on
July 17 for Geneva.

Their training course
is expected to last a little
more than two months.
On their return they will
be appointed as sherpa-
instructors in the Hima-

ELECTRICITY OUTPUT

New Delhi, July, 4
During Maroh this year
electricity generated in
India by 084 undertakings
was 585.7 million k\Vh of
which 483.5 million k\Vh
were sold to ultimate con-
sumers. The data include
figures for six new Govern-
ment undertakings, three
in WeBt Bengal at Bel-
danga. Devagram & Azim-
ganj; the Madhya Pradesh
at Resva and Akot; and
one diesel plant in Hydera-
bad at Manchrial As com-
pared to February, the
output rose by 43 million
kWh.

The corresponding figures
of output and Bale for
March 1953 are 533.1 and
435.7 million kWh and
for March 1939, 200.4 and
1G5.7 million k\Vh res-
pectively.

NATIONAL PLAN LOAN

Subscriptions to the
3J% National Plan Loan
1904 during the period
May 10 to 31, 1954 accor-
ding to reports so far
received, amount to ap-
proximately Rs.23.30 lakhs.
The total subscriptions
since April 19, 1954.
amount to approximately
Rs.80.50 crores.
