TISTA VALLEY ROAD

The breaches on the
Tista Valley road between
Tista and Sevoke have
always created problems
for Kalimpong, Sikkim and
other places that are served
by this highway.

This year due to heavy
rains this road was disloca-
ted many a times and it
is not clear at present also,
due to the slips at several
places. These breaches
have caused great hardship
to the public and the late
arrivals of mails have caused
great inconvenience to the
business people.,

Every year lacs of
rupees are spent on the
maintenance of the Tista
Valley Road. Sometime
back there was a talk of
creating a new railway line
for Kalimpong and we
understand that a thorough
survey was also made, but
the project was abandoned
due to unknown reasons.

Instead of spending a
huge amount of money on
the repairs of the' present
Tista .Valley road it would
be much better if the pro-
posal of a new route, which
also has been the demand

of the local Congress Co-
mmittee and business orga-
nisations, in considered
again.

. The question of whe-
ther there will be any racing
in Darjeeling this 'Autumn
is still not settled. A Mee-
ting of Owners, Trainers
and Jockeys held at the
Gymkhana Club - on Wed-
nesday the 25th August,
indicated thn at present
, there were insufficient ponies
to justify having racing.
The reasons for this state
of affair are many, but
unless some influential men
of the district come forward
and take an interest in
owing ponies or supporting
racing in other ways, it
will be difficult to continue
with this very desirable
amenity to the District. It
must be realised that apart
from the enjoyment of
racing as a sports, it is
al?o an industry which
supports a fairly large
community.

CLAIMS ON BIHAR
TERRITORIES OPPOSED

Monghyr, Aug. 20
At an extraordinary
meeting of the Mongyr
Zila Parishad the mem-
bers condemned in strong-
est terms the unjust de-
mands of West Bengal
and Orissa regarding the
transfer of Manbhum,
Singbhum, Dhalbhum, Se-
raikella, Kbarsawan, Ha-
zaribagh, the Santhal Par-
gans', Pakur and Kisan-
ganj areas of tbe State of
Bihar to their territories
and declared that the
reasons given for the de-
mand are imaginary and
baseless. In the opinion
of the Parishad this is a
most inopportune moment
for raising the issue of
readjustment of boundaries
for it may prove harmful
to the interest of national
solidarity.

Proceeding in the course
of the resolution the Zila
Parishad appealed to tbe
States reorganisation Com-
mission to consider the
question of amalgamating
the areas of Darjeeling,
Jalpaiguri, Malda, Dinaj
pur and Birbhum of West
Bengal with the State of
Bihar for they are more
contiguous to Bihar than
to West Bengal. Referring
to the case of Darjeeling
particularly it was stated
that it once fotmed a
part of Bhagalpur Divi-
sion of Bihar and its peo-
ple were in favour, of its
merger with Bihar.
