FOREST EMPLOYEES' CONFERENCE

Siliguri, November 2

Sri Hemobandra Nas-
kar, Minister for Forest
and Fisheries, West Ben-
gal inaugurated the 23rd
Annual Conference of the
West Bengal Subordinate
Forest Service Association
on Oct. 18 at Siliguri
College premises. Dr.
Charoo Chandra Sanyal,
M.L.C. presided. About
80 delegates from different
parts of West Bengal
attended the Conference.
The Conference adopted 9
resolutions relating to re-
vision of present pay scale,
departmental promotion,
facilities for the education
of employees' ohildren,
medical aid, rent free
quarter for all etc.

Several speakers ap-
prised the Conference
with the conditions and
circumstances in whioh
they had to work in the
remotest places of the
oountry on a meagre pay.

Sri Niranjan Pal,
Conservator General of
Forests, West Bengal told
the Conference on behalf
of the department that
many improvements had
already been made in his
department and much
more would be achieved
during the 2nd five year
plan. He advised the

members of the Associa-
tion to formulate demands
which had reasons and
logic in their support.
He described the method
of approach of some of
its members in their spee-
ches and criticised the wel-
come address of the Re-
ception Committee as well
as the report of the Ge-
naral Secretary.

The out-going Gene-
ral Secretary Sri Gopal
Chandra Dutta in placing
bin annual report said
that when the revenue
of five Forest Divisions
of Northern Circle was
18 lacs in 1928, the re-
venue of Jalp^iguri Fo-
rests Divisior .done was
2S lacs in 19 34-55 but
the oondition of the su-
bordinate forest staff re-
mained as usual with
minor changes here and
there

. . In his speech Sri Hem
Chandra Naskar asked the
staff to have faith in
him as he had already
kept his promise by in-
creasing the pay of the
staff.

A new executive com-
mittee with 27 members
was formed and Messrs.
R. N. Sikdar, M.L.A; B.B.
Khisa and K. C. Sarker,

'speech day" at

girls' school

Kurseong, Nov. 3

The Speech Day at
Downhill Girls' School
was observed duly on
Oct. 20 last. Dr. D. M.
Sen, Seoretary, Education
Department, Government
of West Bengal took the
chair.

The Headmistress of
the School in her report
described the activities of
(he School.

Dr. Son in his speech
said that the Speech Day
was a day of stock-taking.

Dr. Sen said that in
the coming reorganisation
of eduoational system the
diversification of courses
would be the special fea-
ture. Boys of 13 or 14
would have to seek a
Course to 9uit their ap-
titude. The study of
classics was yielding place
to that of the humanities
and sciences.

An exhibition of urts
and crafts of the school
students was held in this
connection. The girls pre-
sented a variety program-
me of music^ vocal and
instrumental Bengali and
English recitations. A
one-act play was staged
by the senior girls.

Sakhender Chandra Das
Gupta were elected Pre-
sident, Vice-Presidents and
General Secretary respec-
tively.
