INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
AT KALIMPONG
Kalimpong, AuguBt 15
The Independence Day
Celebration programme began
here with Prabhat Phery led
by Sri J. B. Sapkota who at
the termination of the Prabhat
Phery garlanded the statue of
Ma-hat ma Gandhi at th<- Gandhi
Gate amidst shouting of National
slogans.
The ceremonial flag hoist-
ing ceremony with accompany-
ment of the National Anthem
was performed at the Mela
Ground by Sri S. N. Roy, the
Sub-Divisional Officer, Kalim-
pong who took the Boy Scout
Salute and in a neat small
speech exhorted the assembled
people to honour the National
Flag and to renew their pledge
to love, honour and serve their
country with patriotic zeal and
loyalty. ''We mupt" continued
Sri Roy 1 'Earnestly resolve td
build ourselves into a great
nation and also strive to
liquidate our innumerable differ-
ences of caste, creed and pro-
vincial attachments."
DeBpite the shower of rains
an exhibition of several folk
dances was given at the Mela
Ground and KHEER was dis
tributed to the assembled
children.
After the flag hoisting
ceremony the S. D. 0., at the
request of Pandit Sudama
Mishra, laid the foundation
stone of the Nehru Rostrum
which is being built in cement
concrete byvPandit Mishra en-
tirely at his own cost at the
site whero the old wooden
Rostrum stood bofore it topp-
led down some days back due
to heavy rains.
The S. D, 0. then proceeded
to the local Town Hall where
he declared open an exhibition
of paintings organised by two
young artists Mr. Twan Yang
and Sri Chandra Gupta, both
of Kalimpong.
School children and some
invited guests were given free
cinema show both at the
Novelty and the Kanchan
Cinemas.
In the oftomoon a huge
procession, the largest since 1947,
of men, women and children
started from the Town Hall
where, before the start of the
procession, sweets were distri-
buted to the children The pro-
cession swelled as it passed
the various streets on its way
to the Mela Ground where it
terminated after several speakers
addressed the public meeting
there.
In the evening' the In-
dependence Shield Football
Final was played betwpen the
S. U. M. 'B' and the Kumudini
Homes (Town School.), Kalim-
pong, when the latter defeated
the former by two goals to one.
For the first time in the seven
years' history of the Independence
Shield a school teams has this
time annexed the very mneh

was this time awarded perma-
nently by M/s Boral 'Brothers
of Kalimpong as an encourage-
ment to S. IT. M Boys who
gave a spendid account of
themselves in the game.
The junior Football. Final
match was also played today
between S. U. M. Boys anil
Motor Sporting (Jr.) when the
former won.

Fancy Football Match was plaved
with Sri S. N. Roy, the locai

used a pair of heavy brass

were dressed in fancy attire
rendering themselves unrecog-
nisable with false whiskers,
masks and turbans.
The Himalayan Times Referee
Award of a Heavy Silver Medal
was presented to Sri Lam Singh*
who was voted as the best
referee of tbe season
The celebrations ended with
a music programme at the
local Town Hall where local
talents took part in vocal music,
and folk danceH.
