NEWS LETTER FROM SIKKIM

Gangtok, March 16

Lt. Col. P. T. Nam
gyal, Maharaj Kumar of
Sikkim who had gone
to Lhasa to invite His
Holiness the Dalai Lama,
to India, to grace the
occasion of the celebration
of the 2500lh anniversary
of the Mahaparinirvana
of Mahatma Buddha, re
turned to Gangtok on
8th inst. Shri N. K Rus-
tomji, the Dewan Sikkim
Mate. ' Maharaj Kumar
J T. Namgyal miri Maha-
raj Kii"\aii Pemu Chokid,
went up to the Kari>"-
nang, and the Executive
Councillors and other high
officials of the State and
Government ol India, went
up to the fourth mile to
welcome him back home
and offered tcarvn Oi
arrival at the Palace, the
Stale Police presented a
Guard of ffoncur and a
large number of people
offered scarves. He looked
very cheerful but refused
to say anything about the
acceptance or refusal o
the invitation by Dalai
Lama.

The main trace route
from Gangtok to Lhasa,
which previously took
about twenty days for a
mule caravan to cover,

can now be covered in
4 or 5 days, by a motor
vehicle. It was understood
that the Maharaj Kumar
of Sikkim covered his
journey from Lhasa to
Yatung in four days, and
that regular motor traffic
will be opened up to Ya-
tung soon. The only
portion now remains to
open fur vehicular traffic
is abon twenty miles,
that is from Yatung to
Ciihangn.

Maharaj Kumarani
Sahiba of Sikkim gave
birth to a daughter in a
nursing home in Calcutta
two week ago. The
Maharaj Kumar went to
Oalotitta immediately after
he arrived from Lhasa to
see his first daughter and
his beloved wife. It may
be remembered that the
Maharaj Kumar has two
sons also.

The whole of Sikkim
appears to be bustling
with preparations for the
Ninth Annual Session of
the Sikkim State Congress
The Working Committee
have decided to hold the
session this year at Den-
tam in Western Sikkim.
President for the next

year will be elected and
the Maha Sauaity meetings
w II be held on Mar 23
and 24. The open session
will be held on Mar. 25.
Shri Dhau Bahadur Gu-
rung, a oongreps member
of tho Sikkim State Coun-
cil is the Chairman of
the Reception Committee.
It is understood that the
three years' term of the
present Sikkim State Coun-
cil, being due to expire
in August next, framing
of rules and changes in
the Proclamations accord-
ing to which the last
general elections were held,
and the question of the
fixation of the land rent,
will be the most impor-
tant items for discussion.
It may be remembered
that a Settlement Survey
which was btarted five
years ago is nearing com-
pletion. The publio de-
mand regarding the land
rent is that is^should be->
fixed in accordance with
the rates prevailing in the
district of Darjeeling.

The enthusiasm seen
amongst the people on
last Feb. 11, when a four
seater plane landed on
the local Polo Ground, is
running high even now.
The Public Works Depart,
ment of the State is busy
widening and lengthening
the ground. Two mecha-
nical graders and a laige
number of labourers are'
