BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHY
(Continued from page 8)
It is interesting to
note that the logical
consequence of holding the
other extremist view about
the self, namely belief in
an eternal Atman, also
leads to a oonculsion si-
milar to the one expres-
sed by Shantideva, oan
be seen in the Bhagwad-
gita where Krishna says
there1 is no 'Killer' or the
'Killed' because the At-
man is common to all,
and uses this as an argu-
ment to oenvince Arjuna
about the rightness of
killing his cousins in war.
In the face of Shanti "
deva's defeatist confession
of the voidness of the
very basis of the Way of
Life he had done so much
to glorify, I must con-
clude that if only. Bud-
dhists all the world over,
Theravadins as well as
Mahayanists, were to re-
ject all theories about
the self (including the
theory that there is no
self). The day will not be
far, off when they will
wake to the real teaching
and as in the days of the
Lord, they will again lay
emphasis on the Way and
the attainment of inward
peace; and realize that it
is better to be followers
of the Buddha than to
be mere Buddhist Philo-
sophers, Theravadin or
Mahayanist.
