LONDON NEWS LETTER

BY B. B. RAY CHAUDHURI

( Oar London Correspondent)
Loudon, January 16

llr Harold Maomillan's
triumphant tour and the
great orations he received
in India and Pakistan
have pleased the majority
of members of the British
Conservative Party. The
British Premier has cer-
tainly attained a Lolable
success and paved the way
to better Indo British un-
derstanding. His diploma-
tic sidetracking oi the
Kashmir issue has oertainly
pleased the Indians here
but to some extent dis-
pleased the Pakistanis. It
is now being stroagly ru
ntbured in ^London that
Psndit Nehru will Boon
issue an invitation to Her
Majesty, the Queen and
H.R.H. Duke of Edinburgh
to visit India I daresay
if such an official invita-
tion is received from the
President and Premier of
India a Royal' visit to
India would be oertain.
Here in London I under-
stand the Mountbattens
are naturally in favour
. of suoh a visit

This week we are all
busy making great pre-
parations for the Indian
Republic Day celebrations,
and the most notable In-
dian function on this oc-

casion is the annual Re
public Day dinner orga-
nised by our Association,
the Indian Journalists'
Association of Great . Bri
tain, on the 28th January.
The new British Chancellor
of the Exchequer will
propose the toast to the
Republic of India on be-
half of the British Govern-
ment, and for the Labour
Party opposition Mr. Nye
Bevan. will respond Mrs.
Pandit will speak, on be-
half of the Indian com-
munity in London. We
i expeot a record number
of guests this year, includ-
ing many Ambassadors of
Bastern and Western'
countries.

I was invited by. the
Asian Film Society of
London to attend a film
show of "Champakali" in
Hindi, starring the Bengali
film actress, Suohitra den..
The Sepretary, Mr. S. N
Gauriaaria, introduced us
to this talented Bengali
film aotress She gave a
wonderful . performance,
but as I pointed out in
one of my previous "Lon-
don Letters'' the snag is
the absence of sub-titles
in English for the benefit
of the non-Hindi speaking

audience- Mr. Gaurisaria
tolls me that in' future
the Society will exhibit
films with English . sub-
titles.
