Letters to the Editor

t» (Ma m1«m «.«. Timu
PICTURESQUE DARJEELING !
Sir, Permit me to

' refer to the following ex-
tract from Peregrine'*
views appeared in the

, Statesman dated May 19,
19SS under the oaption
"Opfortumtibs Uhlimi-
ted".

''For the tourist there
is Kanohenjunga, Tiger
Hill and fresh air. For
the native of Uarjeeling
and Kalimpong ' there is
the growing concern of
unemployment. We1 hare
despair, disillusionment
and unrest beoause without
even cottage industry there
is too little work and too
much time to think The
hill people know what to
produce and how to pro-
duce it. They are merely
waiting for encourage-
ment".

I also take the liberty
to quote here the state-
man of Dr. Ahmed, State
Agriculture Minister,, ap-
peared 'in the Statesman
dated May 20 19S8:

''Agricultural develop- •
ments in the Darjeeling
district were still unable
to mitigate the economic
difficulties of farmers. As
extensive farming was not
possible, emphasis was
laid on the' intensive cul
tivation".

its memorandum, has also
proposed, for extension of
privileges and ■ opportuni-

taks up the matter early
