INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS
AT GANGTOK
Independence day wu
celebrated at Gangtok in
the Residency this ye»r
with greater enthusiasm
than ever before. Hugo
crowds of people from all
communities marched in
procession from the bazar
to the Residency. The
National Flag was hoisted
by the Political Officer in
Sikkim and the detachment
of the Punjab Regiment,
the Boy Scouts and the
Qirl Guides presented
arms. 1 he Maharaja and
the Political Officer in
Sikkim took the Salute.
Both the dignitaries inspec-
ted a Guard of Honour
presented by the army,
'aoouts and the guides
The Politioal Officer
in a short speech explain-
ed the inportanoe of the
day to the people assem-
bled and said that it is
the desire of the Govern -
ment nf ' India to help
Sikkim in its development
as muoh as possible
Sweets were distribu-
ted to the School ohildreu.
On the same occasion
Dr. and Mrs. Ganjn . or-
' ganiaed a variety and cine-
ma show on Aug. 14, 15
and 16. The variety show
inoluded musioal perfor-
mances by looal and other
artists.
AT KURSEONG
Independence Pay was
celebrated at Kurseong in
a befitting manner.
At 9.30 a.m. a rally
of Bharat Scouts & Guides
was held at Mahatab Club
ground. Sri J. K. Kohli
I.A.S., S. D. O., Kurseong
inspeoted the troops of
Bharat Soouts & Guides.
At 10.30 am. doou-
mentry films were.shown
at the Plaza Cinema. ,..
At 1pm. about 1000
poor and indegent people
of the town were fed -and
about 250 of the most
deserving persons received
blankets and other cloth-
ings under the auspices
of the Indian Red ■ Cross
Society, Kurseong branoh.
At 4 p.m. an interest-
ing programme was or-
ganised at the "Retreat"
where a huge gathering
en j eyed the folk songs
and dances of the Hill
people.

The Independence Pay

of Rabindranath Junior
High School, Soureni in
a befitting manner.
A magic show was
shown to the people at
Labour Welfare Centre
in the evening.

The Kagay Communi-
ty Centre, celebrated the
Independence Day with
great enthusiasm and zeal.*

Independence Day was
celebrated at Algarah Com-
munity Centre; this year
- with great pomp and
grandeur. •• The surround-
ing Khasmal Villagers' and
. the' School children of
Santook Paiyown, Mirik,
Pagang and Algarah par-
ticipated in the funotion.
The day's programme
started with a Pravat
Pberi in the morning. A
procession started . at
9 A.M. and went round
the Bazar.
AT JANATA COLLEGE
Independence Day was
celebrated at the Janata
College. In the - morning
prabhat pberi was taken
out. The National Flag
was hoisted at the College
compound by Shri A. R.
Bose, Principal, who also
spoke on the oooasion.
