CHINESE CLIMBING EVEREST FROM NORTH

Base Camp Beyoad Rongbuk Monastery
Katbmendu, May 20

VA SinotJoviet expe
dition is trying to climb
Krirut from the northern
side, according to an
authoritative report recei-
ved here.

The report laid the
expedition had established
ita base oamp beyond the
Rongbuk Monaatiy. Al-
though the exaot number
of the expedition'! mem-
bers is not .known, it is
belitvtd tob- about '00,
including porters.

The reports, which
were not offically con-
firmed, said Chinese air-
craft were regularly flying
over this region, ostensi-
bly to watch the progress
ol this second attempt in
i < cent years to climb
V verest from the northern
side.

The Soviet attempt
to climb it from the north
seme years ago had ended
in disaster, when reports
indicated that some mem-
bers were killed in the
attempt.

Though Everest has
been climbed three times
from the southern side—
onoa by a British team
and twice by 8wiss teams
-it has never been climbed
from the north. The lat
ter route was however

the normally aooepted
route till J05O, because
Nepal had till then refu-
sed permission to expedi-
tions from the south.

Early Information
Meanwhile, a local
Rnglish language daily,
Motherland, which quoted
a Nepal Government
spokesman as its source,
said the Government knew
about three reperts 15
dsys ago. Th's suggests
that the expedition was
already in ti.e vici <\ of
its bate camp before,
Mr Chou En la s vieiia
to India and Nepal.

The Motherland, re
port also said the Chinese
had already climbed Eve-
rest, but this was denied
by the spokesman, who
said, "we have Dot been
told."

ploit the mines round
Rangpoo but other areas,
it is learnt, offer promise
of substantial deposits.

The deposits at Rang-

sufficient for moderate

years. The deposits in
other areae have not vet
