BY DAVID MACDONALD

The Story of Yakro Kharto
On tiia way home, lie
passed by a pool, to the
brink of wbiob led the
footpriota of a maiden,
and in each iraprersion a
flower wat growing. Yakro
Kharto followed the trackn,
whioh finally led him into
the realm oi King Gyajin,
who welcomed him,

"At this 'time,' the
monarch said, 'the various
kinda of evil spirits, in
the forma of black yaka,
are disputing with the
demi-gods, who have as-
sumed the forms ofwhitu
yaks, and neither side
can prevail. If you will
shoot the king of the
black y«k», the devila
will be vanquished, and
flee away." Yakro Kharto
promised to assist the
demi-gods, and the very
next day succeeded in
piercing the tku'i of the
immense chi<-f of the de-
mons, so that be fell.
His followers fled, taking
the carcase with them
In spite, however, of the
repeated invitations of
the kii g, Yakro Kharto
refused to remain longer
with him, so impatient
was he to see his parents.
Before he departed, how-
ever, the monaroh gave
him some advice, "0

Yakro Kharto !", he said;,
"you ar- almost certain
to lose your way, and
if you do, you will arrive
at the house of the devil-
king. Do not be afraid,
nevertheless, but say that
you are a phyaician, and
all will be well."

Even as the kin| had
said, the youth did mis-
take the road, and, ha-
ving arrived at the bouse
of the king of the demons,
be knocked at the door,
until a female devil, brea-
thing nut flames, emerged
and asked him who be
was. Yakra Kharto told
her that he was a
physioian. Hearing this
the. she-fiend invited him
to attend the devil king,
who was surely wounded
in t.ie forehead, the arrow
still being in the wound.
Yakro Kharto, after re-
garding the siok king for
a few moments, seized
the arrow, but, instead
of pulling it out, plunged
it into the demon king's
brain, so that he died.

Yakro Kharto then
fled, pursued by the she-
devil, who flung flaming
darts after him. The gods,
however, seeing his des-
perate plight, let down a
chain from heaven, to
pull him up, but, in vio-

lent were bis efforts to
avoid the fiery missiles,
that before he knew where
he was he had landed
among the stars !
The Story of the Magician
with the Boar's Head
Once upon a time,
in a ' certain country,
there dwelt a married
couple. The husband was
incorrigibly lazy and loat-
hed anything in the shape
of work, sleeping all day
as veil as all night. In-
deed, he would hardly
move from his couch to
take bis meals. One day,
his wife's patience came
to an end. ''Do not be-
ll a v e like this any
longer !" She cried. "All
our money is finished !
Get up and do something,
even if it is only to look
after the bouse while
I work in the fields." Her
husband heeded her words,
and one day, as he sat
meditating on the 'roof,
a great idea came to him.
He would go to a distant
land and seek his fortune.
So,when his wife returned,
he told her of his resolve,
instructing her to saddle
their pony, and to oall
his dog. Putting on his
white hat, adorned with
three magio wheels, he
then took his departure,
in the direction that first
came into bis mind.

Ag he was riding
along, he saw a fox, and
