A. First Series.
Urania, turned slightly r. and looking slightly 1., stands with her soot
advanced, holding a disk in her 1. hand and in her r. a pair of compasses,
the cross-piece of which is curved in the wrong direction. The head and
sorehead are again disproportionately large : she wears a long classical
tunic leaving the r. leg below the knee and both arms bare. Her hair is
knotted over her brow, but salls loosely down her back. In the back-
ground is an undulating landscape with a winding river.

Collections: Seratti, Sykes, Ottley, Galichon, Malcolm.
Purchased 1895. 9. 15. 12.

knot of hair above forehead (which is smaller) omitted; legs slightly
lengthened.

Collections : Sykes, Woodburn.
Purchased 1845. 8. 25. 287.
13. TERPSICHORE (D. 13).
A. First series, (terpsicore xiii.)
Terpsichore, with head too large and sorehead too high, stands in full
face on a ledge of rocky ground beside a lake or river. She wears a loose
classical tunic girt up and falling in folds at the waist, and her r. arm is
bare below the elbow. Her long hair falls loosely down her back. She
holds a gittern in her 1. hand and with a plectrum in her r. touches its
strings. Three stars are over her head and a blank disk near her feet 1.
On the farther shore of the water are hills and a town.
[179 x 100]
(a) Fine early impression in greenish grey ink; wide margin. Watermark 24.
Collections : Seratti, Sykes, Ottley, Galichon, Malcolm.
Purchased 1895. 9. 15. 13.
(b) Less brilliant impression in blacker ink; various details (e.g. hair, disk and
gittern) are coloured in gold ; the disk is also shaded in pen and bistre.
Collection: Harding.
Purchased 1842. 8. 6. 12.
B. Second series, (terpsicore xiii.)

1. and fall of hair modified; arms and gittern kept in same direction,
