14. ERATO (ERATO XIIII. D. 14).
A. First series.
Erato dances with head bent in profile towards the r., playing on a
tambourine which she holds in both hands. Her head is too large; she
wears a ssowing classical tunic which leaves bare her arms and her r. leg
below the knee. Her hair is knotted on the top of her head and above
her sorehead, but falls loose down her back. A blank disk is near her
feet to the r. R. is the bank of a river, and in the background hills with
towers and trees.

The motive is doubtless suggested by some antique relief: compare the
figure to the 1. in a drawing by Pisanello in Oxford (reproduced Colvin,
Selected Drawings, Pt. V. 1. B.), which in its turn has a certain affinity with
a figure in relief at Blenheim (see Michaelis, Ancient Marbles in Great Britain,
p. 216; and a drawing perhaps from the same in the Dal Pozzo collection,
fol. 56, B. M. Dept, of Greek and Roman Antiquities).

Same composition engraved in same direction, with lines and action of
figure less violent, head reduced in size, top-knot omitted and drawing of
hands and arms coarsened.

15. POLYHYMNIA (POLIMNIA XV. D. 15).
A. First series.
Polyhymnia stands with her body turned slightly r. and her face
three-quarters 1., playing a small organ with both hands. She wears a
ssowing classical tunic, which leaves her arms bare. Her hair is knotted
over her forehead, but salls loose down her back. Near her feet r. is a
blank disk, and in the background an undulating landscape with a town
near a stream.
